Exploring Hawaii

June, 2018

Island Hopping, Kite Surfing, and Waterfalls

Duration: 3 days, 2 nights
Island: Maui, HA
Budget: $1500
Miles Travelled: 3,000

My 3-day solo adventure in Maui was the perfect mix of thrill and tranquility. I spent my days chasing hidden waterfalls, learning to kite surf (and laugh at myself in the process), and exploring the island one beach at a time. Traveling alone gave me the freedom to move at my own pace—wake up for sunrise hikes, stay longer at spots that stole my heart, and connect deeply with the local vibe. It felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be.

There’s something about Hawaii that instantly slows you down—in the best way. It’s the sound of waves at sunrise, the scent of plumeria in the air, and the warm, effortless kindness of strangers. It’s a place where solo feels peaceful, not lonely… and where every moment feels like it matters.

Trip Video

Here’s a short video from my solo trip to Maui—sunrise paddleboarding, waterfalls, and the moments that made me fall in love with island life. Hit play and come along for the ride.

Best Food & Drink

1. Da Kitchen – Kahului

If you want a true taste of Hawaiian comfort food, Da Kitchen is the spot. I ordered the chicken katsu plate and couldn’t finish it—it was that big and that good. Bonus: super solo-traveler friendly!

2. Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice – Lahaina

The most refreshing treat after a beach day! Choose from dozens of tropical flavors (I went with mango, lychee, and coconut). Yes, it lives up to the hype.

3. Mama’s Fish House – Paia

This one’s a bit of a splurge, but worth it for the beachfront view and ultra-fresh seafood. I dined solo at sunset, and it honestly felt magical. Try the stuffed mahi-mahi if you go.

Day 1

Started the day early with a drive along the Road to Hana. Stopped at Twin Falls for a short hike and swim, then explored small roadside fruit stands (banana bread is a must!). Ended the day watching surfers at Ho’okipa Beach Park—sunset vibes were unreal.

Day 2

Spent the morning relaxing at Baldwin Beach—super peaceful for solo travelers. In the afternoon, I booked a beginner kite surfing class in Kahului (terrifying and amazing!). Grabbed poke from a local food truck and journaled by the ocean.

Day 3

Woke up at 3 AM to catch sunrise at Haleakalā crater—and wow, it was beyond words. After the drive back, I treated myself to a spa massage and took a solo stroll around Paia Town, grabbing souvenirs and reflecting on the whole trip.
